Public office is a common role for the men. However, it is a fact that women play an important role in our society especially in public service. Their presence in the government allows them to practice their skills and talent. Most importantly, their post assures that both genders will be represented and be heard by the government. Below is a list of some of the female public servants from different countries.
She is the second wife of Sun Yat-sen, thus, she is often referred to as Madame Sun Yat-sen. The People’s Republic of China was founded in 1949. She served as Vice President from 1949 to 1975. She then suffered a critical illness. In May 1981, she was given the title “Honorary President of the People’s Republic of China”.
Carrie Lam became the first female Chief Executive of Hongkong. She won the election with 777 votes out of 1194. Moreover, she served as Chief Secretary for Administration from 2012 to 2017.
She was born Cheng Yuet-ngor from a low-income family of Zhoushan. She was the fourth of five children. In addition, she was fortunate to have the HK government to fund her study at Cambridge University.
Yuriko Koike is a Japanese politician from Ashiya, Hyōgo. She serves as the current governor of Tokyo. This Asian Woman got training from her father, a trade merchant handling oil products. He would occasionally tell Yuriko that it is essential to strengthen relations with the Arab countries. Lest Japan would be forced into war again just to acquire this natural resource. For this reason, Yuriko was convinced to study in Egypt to master Arabic.
Yuriko is pushing reforms to alleviate the status of women in the working world. She also promotes economic liberalism and she supports administrative and budgetary reforms. Finally, her basic principles comprise of 5Cs: Check, Challenge, Change, Creative and Communication.
An Asian Woman’s Role in Music and Arts
Lea Salonga is famous for her role as Kim in the popular 1989 musical Miss Saigon. She worked as talent for the singing voice of Princess Jasmine from Aladdin and Fa Mulan for Mulan and Mulan II. For this reason, she was bestowed by Walt Disney Company with the honor “Disney Legend” in 2011. In addition to her global exposure, she was even selected as one of the judges of the 2011 Miss Universe Pageant in Brazil.
Another musical play where Lea showcased her talent is in the 25th Anniversary Concert of Les Misérables in the UK. She also played the role of Grizabella in a limited run of CATS in the Philippines. Moreover, Lea toured the United States with the legendary Grammy award winner, Patti Austin.
In Spring of 2017, Lea released her album titled “Blurred Lines”. This was recorded during her successful run at Feinstein’s/54Below. Currently, Lea is a judge in “The Voice” Philippines. A member of her team, Mitoy Yonting, was awarded the winner for the first season.
